Black Lives Matter: Letter to Our Community
To our Lewis Family,
As mothers, business owners, and members of our communities, we mourn the loss of Black lives and condemn use of police brutality. We denounce racism, sexism, homophobia and prejudices of all kinds. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are the three most recent heart wrenching tragedies in a litany of historical racial tragedies, and they have woken us up to the fact that we must be part of this fight. We know we’re already late with our efforts. We are learning how and where in our lives we have been part of the problem instead of the solution. Black lives matter.
As we search for what we can do to help disarm racism, our effort is evolving. We began this week by putting our normal agenda on hold. We listened, we read, and we donated both personally and as a company to Color of Change, Grassroots Law Project, and The Marsha P. Johnson Institute.
Today we are beginning our commitment to help in this fight by sharing Black owned businesses we have already bought from or admire greatly. We hope that sharing them helps amplify their voices, and increases their platforms (link below).
We have begun to plan products that support racial justice. We know that as our brand grows, as two white female founders, we must always seek out diversity in our suppliers, our staff, and our education.
With all of this, we believe our most important tool in changing the world is how we raise our children. A neighbor used to always say, “I believe our children are rehearsing for a better world.” May our rehearsals be filled with love, compassion, diverse friends and thoughts, loud voices that seek to magnify the voices of the oppressed, an understanding of the power of the vote, and an empathy to always give back. “We are the bows from which our children as living arrows are sent forth.” - Kahlil Gibran
With hopeful hearts,
